7. Sketchbook: 2008-09, Exquisite Corpse with Cheryl Klein

Late 2008, I had been kicking around the idea of working with a writer on a drawing/writing exchange.  In addition to verbal communication, an individual’s penmanship is unique and personalized.  Aesthetically speaking, the hand written word is a form of mark making.

This sketchbook exchange is a collaborative artwork between writer/author Cheryl Klein ( The Commuters, Lilac Mines) and myself. The project is inspired by the Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse.

In this work, each participant allowed the medium of the other to influence and shape the direction of each entry. In this way, narrative traversed word and image, taking shape through process.

The book was passed back and forth through the mail for over a year, beginning in March 2009 and ending in May 2010.
